The Chemistry Department extends its hearty congratulations to Karen Olsen, who recently successfully completed the defense of her Ph.D. dissertation, entitled “Mechanism and Conformational Dynamics of the Yeast Isoprenylcysteine Carboxyl Methyltransferase, Ste14p.” After graduating as a chemistry major from Sewanee in 2010, Karen enrolled in the Ph.D. program at Purdue University and joined the lab of Professor Christine Hrycyna in the Department of Chemistry to study biochemical processes. Karen will be moving to a post-doctoral fellowship at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia this summer.

The final installment of Friday School at Sewanee Elementary ended with a bang! Seniors Sydney Jackson and Palmer Coleman accompanied Ms. Abernathy and the Drs. Seballos to the elementary school on Friday, April 29th.

Three posters by students and faculty from the Chemistry Department were recognized for excellence at the 2016 edition of Scholarship Sewanee. Anna Williams(a first year student considering a chemistry major) mentored by Dr.Robert Bachman was awarded First Prize in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Category. Cid Oculam (a senior Biology major/Chemistry minor), Oksana Creech (a junior Chemistry/Russian major), and Logan Brammer (a sophomore Chemistry major) mentored by Dr. Bethel Seballos were awarded second place in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Category. Megan Hopson (a junior Environment and Sustainability major) mentored by Dr. Emily White was awarded First Prize in the Environmental and Earth Sciences Category.

Chemistry and Biochemistry majors and minors contributed 24 presentations (22 posters and 2 oral presentation) at the 2016 Scholarship Sewanee related to the original research they have performed both under the individual mentorship of faculty, both here and at other institutions, and in their regular courses.

The Biology and Chemistry Departments invite you to a celebration of the end of classes! It will be on Thursday December 10, 2-15 from 12:00-2:00 pm in Harris Commons in Spencer Hall. There will be food, crafts, cookie decorating, music and games! All students in any biology or chemistry classes are invited (plus anyone who wishes they had been in a biology or chemistry class this semester).

Associate Professor of Chemistry Deon Miles recently wrote an article published in the Journal of Chemical Education entitled “Laboratory Development and Lecture Renovation for a Science of Food and Cooking Course” (J. Chem. Educ. 2014, 91, 1637−1642). The article focused on the recent changes made to the course (CHEM 110), which is targeted to nonscience majors at Sewanee. Students now have the opportunity to work in the laboratory setting on food-related experiments, including the preparation of homemade ice cream. Also, near the end of the course, the class takes a field trip to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery (in nearby Lynchburg, TN) to study large-scale distillation and fermentation processes.

Five students presented research they have conducted in conjunction with faculty in the Chemistry Department at the 2015 Southeast Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society, which was held November 4-7, in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Deon Miles, Dr. Bethel Sharma Seballos, and Dr. Matt Sanderson attended the meeting with the following students: Lauren Petrosh (C'16), Tia Strickland (C'16), Cid Oculam (C'16), Sonia Francone (C'17), and Emily Shriner (C'18).

Each fall the Chemistry Department announces three awards at the Founder’s Day Convocation in recognition of outstanding student achievement in the study of Chemistry. These students were also recognized at a brief ceremony held prior to the departmental seminar held that day, where they were presented with their certificates and prizes.

Participating faculty represent seven of the Associated Colleges of the South schools and a variety of disciplines. Climate expert Dr. David Stooksbury (University of Georgia) will present the opening plenary lecture.

Several students from the Chemistry Department presented oral and poster presentations at Scholarship Sewanee on April 24, 2015. Thirteen posters and one oral presentation were presented. Luis Tinoco, Fernando Acosta, William Wright, Sonia Francone, and Ena Aguilar mentored by Dr. Deon Miles won second place in the Physical Sciences division with their poster "Size characterization and surface modification of monolayer-protected quantum dots." Leslie Leiva, Veronica Gordillo-Herrejon, and Ava Conner mentored by Dr. Emily White won third place in the Physical Sciences division with their poster "Monitoring wastewater treatment by a rural falcultative lagoon system."
